Plumbing facts for Dana Point
Dana Point has two ZIP codes and two water districts. ZIP 92629 covers about 78 percent of the city, and 92624, Capistrano Beach, nearly all of the rest. South Coast Water District serves most addresses and Moulton Niguel Water District the remainder, which the state's service-area map shows as a strip along the north edge; the City points residents to the district boundary map to tell which is which. Former San Juan Capistrano utility customers inside Dana Point moved to South Coast on November 15, 2021. About 85 percent of South Coast's 2025 water was imported, and its three sources ran from about 12 to 17 grains per gallon, hard enough to leave scale in any water heater.
Dana Point has about 16,500 homes by the Census count, and 1979 is the median year they were built. A little over half, 53 percent, predate 1980, and the 1970s and 1980s together account for 63 percent of the housing. Of every 100 homes, 52 are detached houses; attached homes, buildings of two to four units and larger complexes make up nearly all of the remainder. About 1,700 homes, 11 percent, are kept for seasonal or occasional use. In a house nobody is living in this week, a split supply line or a failed toilet valve can run for days before anyone notices, so if you look after one, find the main shutoff before you need it.
South Coast Water District gives its customers a simple test for a hidden leak. The meter usually sits in or near the sidewalk under a composite lid, and after 24 hours of nonstop use its display shows a dripping-faucet icon. Close the valve at the house and watch the meter: if it keeps turning, the leak is on the line between the meter and the house; if it stops, the leak is past that valve, inside the house. Tell us what the meter did when you phone, day or night. From Niguel Shores and the Strands to the streets near Doheny State Beach, the plumber comes out to your address.
On the sewer side, South Coast runs about 140 miles of pipe and 13 lift stations, carrying flow to the J.B. Latham plant on Del Obispo Street or to the Coastal Treatment Plant. The district's job stops at the main under the street. Everything from your house to the point where your lateral joins that main is yours to keep clear and in repair, and South Coast says most sewer spills in its area start with roots or grease in private lines. For permits, Dana Point's Building & Safety division, at 33282 Golden Lantern, takes applications only through its eTRAKIT portal; every water heater installation or replacement needs one, plus a final inspection.
Over the Dana Point line, in Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente or Laguna Beach, the same 24-hour line answers and the plumber still comes to you from Dana Point. The cause of a leak or a backup is found before anything is opened, and the work waits until you have the price in writing.
